Day 1 – Welcome to Whitehorse & Aurora Viewing

Welcome to Whitehorse! Upon arrival, we will greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in downtown Whitehorse. Your hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of local attractions, restaurants, shops, and banks.

Later, you will attend a brief welcome meeting where we will provide an overview of your stay and assist with registration for optional tours. The remainder of the afternoon and evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure—perhaps take time for winter clothing fitting (optional), explore downtown, or enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants.

At 10:00 PM, we depart for your first Aurora viewing experience. Relax in a cozy, heated cabin or wall tent while enjoying hot drinks and snacks as you watch for the magical Northern Lights with fellow travellers. Return to your hotel is scheduled for approximately 2:30 AM.

Day 2 – Journey to Aurora Island & Backcountry Adventure

Your guide will meet you at your hotel at 9:30 AM to begin your journey into the Yukon wilderness.

Depending on weather conditions, we will access Aurora Island either by a scenic flight or by a combination of vehicle and snowmobile travel, where we will be driving approximately one hour north on the north Klondike highway before continuing by snowmobile through stunning backcountry terrain. Portions of this trail were once part of the renowned Yukon Quest route and are still used by local trappers and outdoor enthusiasts. As we travel through pristine wilderness, we’ll keep an eye out for wildlife tracks and pause for a warm drink and snack along the way. Before setting off, you will receive a full safety briefing and hands-on instruction on operating your snowmobile.

After approximately two hours of travel, we arrive at Aurora Island—where your fully private wilderness experience begins. The site consists of cabins including a sauna, the guide cabin, a modern outhouse, as well as the comfort of your own private northern cabin.

Upon arrival, we’ll settle in by warming the cabins, and having lunch prepared for you. In the afternoon, enjoy a snowmobile excursion around the lake to familiarize yourself with the area.

In the evening, after a hearty dinner, there is a chance to unwind as your guide shares stories about the region and its history. Once darkness falls, step outside to experience the breathtaking Northern Lights beneath a vast, Yukon sky, on your private deck.

Day 3 – Private Wilderness Exploration

Start your day with a delicious northern breakfast before heading out to explore more of the surrounding wilderness as part of your private guided experience. Today’s adventure may include snowmobiling, ice fishing, or snowshoeing, depending on your preference. We will travel through spectacular landscapes, offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountain landscape. It’s a full day of fresh air, scenic beauty, and northern adventure. Alternatively, you have the option to simply relax in front of the fireplace or in your private Sauna.

In the evening, weather permitting, you may once again witness the awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis dancing across the sky in the tranquility of your private setting.

Day 4 – Return to Whitehorse & Final Aurora Viewing

Enjoy a relaxed morning at Aurora Island. After breakfast we relax and then we journey back to Whitehorse either by plane or snowmobile/vehicle pending weather conditions, arriving at your downtown hotel between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

At 10:00 PM, we’ll head out for your final Aurora viewing experience at the Northern Tales Trading Post. Settle in with warm drinks and take in one last chance to witness this unforgettable natural phenomenon with other travellers. Return to your hotel is expected around 2:30 AM.

Day 5 – Departure

After an incredible Yukon experience, we will transfer you to the airport for your departure. Safe travels—we hope to welcome you back again soon. Of course, you have the option to extend your stay in Whitehorse, if desired.

NOTES
  • Life on Aurora Island is intentionally simple and deeply connected to nature. Instead of modern plumbing, you will use a traditional outhouse. Due to the remoteness, the cabins are designed without running water, electricity, or internet. This complete disconnection allows you to step away from the noise of daily life and fully immerse yourself in the stillness of the northern wilderness. It’s a rare opportunity to slow down, unwind, and experience the Yukon in its most authentic and peaceful form.
  • Average temperatures at the this time of winter are between -2° and – 24° Celsius / 28 to -31 degrees Fahrenheit, but extremes may be as low as -45° Celsius / -50 Fahrenheit. We ask you to bring adequate clothing to withstand these temperatures. You may buy winter clothing in Whitehorse or rent a clothing package from Northern Tales. The tour cannot be conducted without adequate clothing. The guides will assess your personal clothing equipment (if you haven’t rented) at time of pick-up on day 2. Please note if you do not have adequate clothing and should last minute rental  not be possible anymore, the component of the remote cabin will be cancelled without refund.
  • This tour has many elements of an expedition and therefore changes in the itinerary due to cold temperature or other events are a possibility. Northern Tales explicitly reserves the right to adapt the tour itinerary.
  • Canadian law requires that you sign a ‘release of claims and waiver of liability form’ prior to participating on this trip.
